The county is the 89th most populated statistical area in the United States. The population center for the state of Florida is in Polk County near Lake Wales. Courthouse

The current courthouse is located at 255 N. Broadway Ave in Bartow, Florida, across the street from the historic courthouse. The courthouse is ten stories high but was left vacant for several years because of construction and design problems.

County Clerk

Stacy M. Butterfield, CPA, is the Clerk of the Circuit Court & Comptroller. She is the official county clerk, and her responsibilities include three branches that oversee more than 1,000 duties for the county. The Clerks Office aims to make services as convenient and accessible as possible.

The county recorder works hand in hand with the clerk of the court to maintain official county records. District Court

The Second District Court of Appeals is located in Polk County, FL, at 811 E. Main Street, Lakeland, FL 33801. It hears arguments of circuit and county court decisions from three of Florida’s twenty judicial circuits.

Tenth Judicial Circuit Court

The Tenth Judicial Circuit Count comprises five Circuit Court Divisions: civil, criminal (felony), family, juvenile, probate, and county court, including criminal (misdemeanor), general civil, and small claims courts.
Civil Court Division of the Tenth Judicial Circuit hears non-criminal litigation matters. The Circuit Civil Division has jurisdiction over more than $30,000.

The Criminal Court Division listens to the facts and applies the law in criminal violations through the trial process. The Circuit Criminal (Felony) Division resides in all felony cases. The County Criminal Division presides over animal, marine, traffic infractions, and traffic crimes.

They also hear county and municipal ordinances and criminal misdemeanors.

The Family Court Division handles all domestic matters, including divorce proceedings, child custody, paternity, adoption, support, and visitation. If there are domestic violence infections, the Family Court takes care of them.

The Juvenile Court Division presides over juvenile delinquency where children under the age of eighteen have violated criminal law. In addition to juvenile delinquency, the Juvenile Court hears juvenile dependency cases where children are abused, abandoned, or neglected. The Juvenile Judge can also determine whether or not parental rights should be voided.

The Probate Division takes care of the probate of wills and the equitable administration of estates and trusts. The Probate Court conducts incompetency proceedings under the Baker and Myers Act as specified in Florida Statute 394. Public guardianship is also a task of the Probate Division.

Felony Drug Court

Florida started the drug court movement in 1986 by creating the first drug court in the States. Studies have proven that drug courts reduce crime, provide treatment options, and produce cost benefits.
There are 52 adult drug courts, 14 juvenile drug courts, 13 dependency drug courts, and 4 DUI courts in Florida. The Polk County Drug Center provides intervention and treatment services for youth and adults, promoting client accountability and improving public safety. The Problem Solving Court is a court-supervised, comprehensive treatment program for nonviolent defendants.
